Learn More About Stair Noses
If you have steps, you'll need to finish them with noses. We have a few options with nosing:
Option 1: Custom-made Nose
We send off your stair nosing to our carpentry workshop and we custom-make the stair nose out of your exact floorboard. This is the most premium option and you'll be able to achieve the exact same finish, shine-level and texture as your flooring. This also eliminates any risks with colour variations between batches.
- Timber, Laminate & Bamboo - are sawn and glued together to make dimensions typically of 110mm top, 30mm vertical and 20mm return, forming a rectangular shaped nose.
- Hybrid & Vinyl - are routed and hot-bent around a supporting block to create a rectangular nose with smooth rounded corners. Typical dimensions are 110mm top, 30mm vertical and 20mm return, unless otherwise specified.
Option 2: Factory Pre-Made Noses
For some of our popular and budget ranges in laminate and hybrid, we stock some factory made noses that are wrapped in the same colour print as the floor. Most of these are almost indistinguishable from your floor, however, technically speaking they are made with a different manufacturing approach and hence will have slight variations in shine, colour and texture. The benefit is it's readily available without lead-times and cheaper, however, they may not always be the perfect match.
Option 3: Aluminium Pre-Made Noses
These are aluminium noses (some in aluminium colours and some in timber-design colours) that are universal - meaning they can be used for any floor as they are directly glued to the floor. These are commonly the most slip-resistant (with a plastic anti-slip strip) and most cost-effective option of the 3.
How to Install Noses
All noses need to be thoroughly direct stuck to the staircase (substrate). You will typically use a polyurethane or MS (modified silane) adhesive - these are high quality, high strength and elastic adhesives that will withstand foot-traffic overtime. If you are using 600ml Glue Sausages, you can apply them with a glue / silicone gun or simply poke a hole and spread it thoroughly over the floor. Make sure to glue everything - the tread, rise and stair noses!
As a rule of thumb, when gluing everything, one 600ml sausage can cover around 2 ordinary sized steps!
If you are installing a Universal aluminium nose, you are gluing the floorboards first to the entire visible area before applying glue underneath the nose and then gluing the nose onto the flooring.
Use tape to hold down the flooring and noses and avoid foot traffic for atleast 12 hours until the glue begins to cure.
