Are you laying underlay under it?

Underlay lifts the floor, so it counts towards the base kit size.

Which flooring trim do I need?

Every floating floor needs an expansion gap where it meets another surface, and a trim is what covers that gap. Which flooring trim you need depends on what your floor stops against, and whether there is a height difference between the two.

Where your floor stops The trim What it does
Two floors at the same height Flat Cover Trim An H-shaped section that straddles both floors for a flush, near-invisible join.
Floors a few millimetres apart Universal Cover Trim Bridges small height differences between timber, laminate, hybrid or vinyl flooring.
A real step down to tile, carpet or concrete Ramp Trim A reducer that slopes down to the lower surface. Covers a drop of up to 45mm.
A sliding door track or a carpet edge End Border Trim A low C-shaped end cap that finishes the cut edge of your boards.
A cut edge, a step nose, or a tight gap L Angle Trim A single glued-on angle. Small suits floors 5mm and up, large suits 10mm and up.

How base kit sizes work

Every aluminium floor trim except the L angle comes as a base plus a cover. The base glues to the subfloor and the cover clips into it. The base kit is sized on your total build-up, which is the flooring thickness plus any underlay. A 14mm engineered oak over 3mm rubber underlay comes to 17mm, so it takes the 17-21mm base kit, not the 14-16mm one.

How many lengths of trim do you need?

All of our aluminium floor trims are 2700mm long. Add up the total metres you need to cover, divide by 2.7, and round up to the next whole length. The trim finder above does this for you at every doorway.
