Frequently Asked Questions

Is 3mm vinyl plank flooring waterproof?

Yes. 3mm Vinyl Max is 100% waterproof. The plank is made from 100% virgin PVC with no filler or wood content, so it will not swell, warp or delaminate when exposed to water. This makes it one of the few flooring types that can be installed throughout an entire home, including wet areas. See how it stacks up against other options in our flooring comparison guide.

Can 3mm vinyl flooring be used in bathrooms and laundries?

Yes. Because the plank is 100% waterproof and glued directly to the subfloor, 3mm Vinyl Max is suitable for bathrooms, laundries, kitchens and other wet areas where timber, bamboo and most hybrid flooring cannot be used. It also carries a P2 slip rating (mean SRV 32) under AS 4586-2013 wet pendulum testing.

Is 3mm vinyl flooring thick enough to be durable?

Durability in vinyl comes from the wear layer, not the total thickness. 3mm Vinyl Max has a 0.55mm commercial-grade wear layer, which is significantly thicker than the 0.3mm found on most budget vinyl planks. Because the plank is glued directly to the subfloor with no air gap underneath, the total thickness carries no load, the subfloor does. If you want the thickest wear layer we stock, look at the 5mm Pro Vinyl range with its 0.7mm commercial wear layer.

How is 3mm Vinyl Max installed?

3mm Vinyl Max is a direct-stick glue down floor. The plank is bonded to a clean, flat, dry subfloor using Universal 2000 Adhesive (Styccobond F58). F. Ball F44 or F49 Plus can be used as alternatives, with F49 Plus recommended for areas with direct sunlight or higher temperature fluctuation. Read our guide to choosing the right adhesive or the step-by-step DIY flooring installation guide before you start.

Does my subfloor need preparing before installation?

Yes. A glue down floor needs a subfloor that is clean, dry, flat and primed — any dip or ridge underneath will telegraph through a 3mm plank. Concrete slabs are primed with Concrete & Porous Primer and timber substrates with Timber & Non-Porous Primer, then levelled with self levelling compound. Our floor preparation guide walks through the full process, and the preparation and levelling range has everything you need.

Does 3mm vinyl flooring need underlay?

No. Because 3mm Vinyl Max is glued directly to the subfloor, no underlay is used in a standard installation. Underlay is only used where an acoustic rating is required — for example in an apartment or strata building, where the plank is installed over a 5mm Rubber Underlay. Our underlay guide explains when each type is needed.

What is the difference between 3mm vinyl and hybrid flooring?

3mm vinyl is a thin, flexible, glued-down plank, while hybrid is a thicker, rigid plank that clicks together and floats over the subfloor. Vinyl is fully waterproof and suited to wet areas, and it sits lower, which helps when matching existing floor heights. Hybrid is easier to install as a DIY floating floor and feels firmer underfoot.
